Nature Notes

Yesterday we found wild asters behind the back fence - Michaelmas daisies on Michaelmas! I cut some (leaving many) and placed them in a vase at our nature table. ****************************************** Cool and cloudy today but we've had several nice days this week - warm, windy, golden. ****************************************** Full Harvest Moon on Sunday night! ******************************************

That morel thing is a mushroom? We don't have anything like that in west monroe, louisiana. Yea baby, I live in the good ole' U.S.A!

The forget-me-nots are lovely, Dawn! The tea set I brought back from England had forget-me-nots on it (and other flowers too), a big selling point for me!

Heather

What a great idea! I have been calling my little ones "nature detectives" for a while now. They absolutely LOVE to discover and point out something new.

Theresa

Fun, Dawn! What a lot of neat stuff to ponder!

Dawn

Wow, thank you everyone for your kind comments and thoughts on my pictures!

Valerie, I think you are right! I saw a little black bee leg moving up in there today. I didn't get any closer., lol.

Beth, wild phlox sounds right - it has spread a lot behind our fence. Last summer a hummingbird moth loved it.

Rebecca, I think you're right about the yarrow! I looked it up online and it looks just like the images I found. Strangely enough, it is growing in our fern bed!

AH, bugleweed, Katie! Yes, I think that's what it is. I looked all over last summer trying to i.d. that plant. Thanks!

I *believe that the flower below the morel is ajuga, or bugleweed. Of what I understand, technically it's a perennial groundcover, but spreads easily, even into other yards. It reminds me of the grape hyacinths we get in odd places in the yard--squirrels must be stealing them from other gardens on burying them here.

How exciting to live and learn in your little corner of the world!!!

What an exciting post!!

You've got me all excited now. This would be such a fun thing to do over the summer with friends.

Can't wait to see a follow up post.

Have a blessed day.

Rebecca

I think the plant that looks fernlike is yarrow. I have both yellow and cinnamon in my yard. Watch and see if it blossoms and what color they are. Just my wild guess! :)

Beth

I'd say the plant pictured above the rhododendron is wild phlox. Some people hate it as it's invasive -- it can *really* spread. I let some of it grow in my yard as I love the colors but I pull it out each year before it goes to seed. But in the meantime, certain butterflies like it, we've had lots of red admirals on ours.

Valerie

That hole in the wood above the hanging plant was made by a wood bee or carpenter bee. They drill inside the wood (underside)then turn 90 degrees and make a long tunnel to lay eggs. The females have stingers, though they won't do anything unless they are provoked. The males "patrol" the hole, but don't have stingers. They are quite large bees, looking a lot like bumble bees without the fuzziness. We had some in our deck and could even hear them munching a tunnel in the railing!
